The Nutcracker ballet is one of the most iconic holiday events. What makes this production so outstanding? We literally see the sets, including the Christmas tree, grow to give the illusion that Klara and Drosselmeyer are shrinking. The two eventually step into a beautiful winter setting complete with magnificent wolves pulling the Snow Tsarina in her sleigh. He has incorporated over-the-top theatrical miming elements for the characters to communicate to each other with. The playful choreography of the children in the party scene and the traditional social dancing among the parents is very appropriate for the story.
All feet on deck for Ballet Austin’s ‘The Nutcracker’
Vineland Regional Dance Company presents ‘The Nutcracker Ballet’
One Christmas, my older brother and I got into an old-fashioned sibling argument because I wanted to see our local ballet company perform The Nutcracker. And in a little sister victory, we saw The Nutcracker. So for anyone making a film adaptation of this holiday ballet, one question emerges: How do you make a whole movie out of a ballet that wraps up its central conflict and any semblance of a plot before the curtains close on Act One? It transcends the label. I remember loving this movie and watching it year-round, but my recollection of film itself is hazy.
Peals of music ring out, occasionally interrupted by the light thumps of pointe shoes against the studio floor and the teacher's voice: "Foot is good, foot is good. That was nice … nice, very beautiful! The coach, Weymouth resident Donna Silva, watches ballerina Ruth Whitney as the dancer twirls around the room. Her silver-gray eyes follow Whitney's motion, the slight tilt of her head, the curves of her palms. The part is one of the most challenging of all the "Nutcracker" roles, but Whitney is in good hands.
But I was. Below is a rough transcript of about three of the 90 minutes of dialogue I had with my small daughter sitting in the seat next to me, whispering in my ear while snowflakes, sugarplum fairies, creepy looking mice, a nutcracker and countless ballet dancers leapt and twirled across a lit-up stage while the people around us tried to enjoy the show, despite the incessant narrative that was being asked of me. And is she a real doll? Or a person?
